No Naysayers

If nobody critiques your idea it means one or more of the following:

  1. You have a great idea
  2. Your idea is similar to something that's already being done
  3. They are too nice to criticize
  4. They don't have the relevant knowledge/expertise to give an intelligent critique
  5. ...?
Any other possibilities?

A Question of Logic

Can one be in denial if one acknowledges that one is in denial?

For the Record:

You know that really hot mustard that comes with Chinese food? I didn't like it for most of my life.

But now I do.

Perfunctory Blogging

Not much time or motivation to blog today. Billary bummed me out on Tuesday. Week's almost over. Warming up around here. I just made the most amazing chicken stock of all time.

Bibliophilia

There are few greater pleasures in my humble yet informed and considered opinion than reading a novel that is completely immersive. You know the one - it beckons to you while you're in the middle of more important duties; it waits for you when you get home in the evening to give it the time and attention it so deserves.

I think that Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell might just be one of these rare treats. Started it yesterday after having come across a cheap copy. 100+ pages in and I look forward to continuing the tale.

Good rec (I reckon), Foonyor.

Easter

My brother and I had a brief discussion before heading over to my Nana's house for Easter dinner Sunday afternoon. He was complaining, saying that Easter was a B-side holiday ("Nothing to do but watch the Masters"). I countered with, "It's basically the same as Thanksgiving. You go eat a big dinner and hang out." He countered with, "No, you're an idiot, Thanksgiving is the Ultimate Man's Holiday - huge amount of great food and football all day."

Point, Beebe.

Still, considering that Turkey Day football has only a small chance of being entertaining or important considering the traditional teams (I hate watching Detroit. At all. Every year.) I stand by my comment that they are just two big meals with the mixed bag of hanging out with the extended family for a few hours. Beebe also made the point that Thanksgiving lacks any religious obligations - true enough, I suppose, but a laughable consideration for yours truly.

(For those of you concerned about my soul: yes, I might be dabbling with eternal damnation if such a thing existed; as it is I have enough people praying for me to hedge my bets in the extremely unlikely circumstance that I am wrong in my theological beliefs - which are, to be honest, nonexistent.)

My Mom drove me and my roommates back from Easter dinner (The roast beef was heavenly. I was working on my extended 2nd helping while the dessert and coffee were being placed in front of me. I, unlike so many others, like to take time to enjoy the finer things in life. Good food is one of those things. Must we scarf down our nutrients as if scavengers will set upon us and derive us of our food? Methinks not. Take a breath between bites, sit back, and chew your food slowly fer fahk's sake.) and we watched The Sopranos and Entourage.

And I will comment on those in another post. Maybe.

txtmsg4u

I know less about women...than anyone in the world.

But are we still in high school? Do we lack the maturity to engage in actual conversation? Are we so lazy that we must communicate by text message?

Seriously. WTF?

Fantastic!

You know what's amazing? Waking up at 3:40AM and not being able to get back to sleep! Really, you should try it! Fantastic!

On the plus side, I guess I can make a real breakfast and eat it at my leisure. And...go to work early. Great.

Weird

Three people in the last few weeks have commented to me, "You look tan." This is weird for a number of reasons:

  1. I most definitely do not look tan.
  2. I am a pasty Franco-Canuck potatophage.
  3. Even when I actually am tan, people don't comment on how tan I am.
Perhaps I'm more ruddy-faced these days? Maybe I blush a lot? Who knows.

Weird.

Late Night Scenes: Hub Bias?

One of the few things that irks me about Boston - a city that I absolutely love - is the fact that the night life closes down by 2AM (if you're lucky). Every time I visit NYC I envy those nightowls who get to rage until all hours of the early morning.

However - and this past Friday brought this to light, as I found myself awake until 5AM to the tunes of the Scissor Sisters at an impromptu dance party at Club 259 - I wonder if the fact that the Boston scene shuts down early actually creates both the desire and the need for ad hoc late night scenes. Especially in the past six months or so, it seems that we have hosted various semi-random friends-of-friends-of-friends here at Club 259, as well as hanging out at the odd Charlestown apartment. The cool thing is that often times these chill late night scenes can be a lot more fun/interesting/cost-effective than having several more rounds in Bar X.

I dunno. Food for thought.

Weird

I've spent a lot of time at work this week. And for various reasons, I don't want to KY.

Weird.

Quickest Recovery Ever

This past weekend I had a bit of a tickle in my throat, but it wasn't until Monday morning that I felt legitimately sick. It was your garden-variety head cold, but a day of rest, relaxation and Airborne on Tuesday got me right back in the running. Here it is, 48 hours later and I'm feeling great.

Do I attribute this solely to the Airborne? No, but through its agency I did infuse myself with thousands of milligrams of Vitamin C and a host of other vitamins, minerals and herbs (Chinese Vitex? Sounds like a serpent.) This is the quickest recovery from a cold that I can remember. Usually I sniffle around for a week or so before it'll pass.

I back the stuff. To put it another way, a point to Airborne.

What season is this?

Nice to see some snow out there for once this winter.

Quarantine

In a small office, everyone goes into panic mode whenever one of the team is sick. Yesterday I woke up with cold symptoms and went in - I was hardly on my deathbed. But after a fairly unproductive day due to low energy, the brilliant strategery of General Malaise, and the entreaty of my colleagues to "please stay home so you don't get us all sick," I've decided to take the safe route and convalesce today at Hospital 259.

On the recommendation of several of my fellows, I've been taking some Airborne (I know it's intended to strengthen the immune system before one gets sick, but I figured all this extra Vitamic C won't hurt). I'm always dubious about these things, but I think it might have a fairly potent placebo effect at the very least. The original orange flavour is a tasty, smooth, invigorating beverage that is definitely helping me return to 100% (trying to get the placebo ball rolling here).

Also - Odwalla's Citrus C Monster smoothie is good stuff.

Heather sent me a link to this rig called the Great American Book Giveaway. Each week you can enter to win one of five books. It's a cool idea, and a pretty good way to advertise these new titles and authors. This week's selection isn't exactly up my alley, but there's potential.

More importantly, I need to make sure I'm at 100% for the arrival of a *certain* Dunndee this weekend. Lord knows my immune system is going to be put through the ringer again.

Cool

A very cool video of an aluminum "ship" floating on gas much denser than air. Check it out.

Props to ALR for the link.

Things That Are Fantastic

  1. Scrubs: How fantastic is it that they show back-to-back reruns on Comedy Central in the 7-8 time slot? How fantastic is it that this great show follows The Office? Pretty fantastic.
  2. Thursday night: A solid lineup on NBC (The Office & Scrubs, obviously; Earl is so-so and 30 Rock is daecent).
  3. Last.fm: Seriously, guys. Seriously.
  4. George Strait: Simply because you can can refer to him as George Skrait.
  5. The Border Cafe: Dinner tomorrow. Catfish tacos or the beef burro? Or do I want to veer off those well-worn paths?
  6. The Bruins: Actually, I couldn't give a rat's arse about the Bruins. But there's some kind of rig on Saturday that looks to be sweet.
  7. Working with cool people: Highly underrated.
  8. Compliments directed toward me in abundance: Also, highly underrated.
  9. The World Wide Blogonets
  10. My being in a fairly goofily good mood as of late: Mysterious, yet fantastic.
