Holiday humor: SNL's "Schweddy Balls" sketch (video)

This time of year causes many to think of friends, family, and holiday traditions. One of my favorite holiday traditions is rewatching the infamous Schweddy Balls skit from Saturday Night Live. This is . . . more

Happy National Coffee Day!

Did you know that today is National Coffee Day? Neither did I, until about 5 minutes ago. You might be able to snag a free cup from your favorite local coffee shop. Personally, I'm currently celebrating . . . more

I Can't Believe We Made It!

A somewhat belated post-New Year's "Happy New Year!" post to my fellow blogospherians. Some highlights from spending the final night of '08 and early days of '09 in the Empire and Garden states:

  • Driving down during the Great Blizzard of '08 in Dunndee's Trans Am, AKA the Car with No Traction, Wiper Fluid, Functioning Wiper Blades, Rear Windshield Heating Element, or Headlights. At one point I thought we were going to be stuck in a rest area parking lot on 84 until 2009.
  • Great New Year's Eve party "in the village," as they say, replete with bottomless Strong Islands, lots of A-side peeps, and vaulting bartenders
  • 24 hours on Dunndee's couch on Jan 1st. Quite literally.
  • Seeing the outside of an old law school building at Rutgers Law, Newark, AKA "City Law University," the law school Mike McD attends in Rounders, a film I watched approximately 146 times in college. Damon, Norton, Malkovich, and Turturro at their absolute peaks.
  • Getting serenaded a cappella by five cheerful gentlemen in the wee hours of 2009 on the PATH train from World Trade Center back to Penn Station, Newark, NJ. A brief but comical Hall & Oates stint - "Hey, what you wanna listen to? White people music? What do white people listen to? Hall and Oates!" - was followed up by a little Sam Cooke at my request. A few bars of "A Change Is Gonna Come" were all too appropriate at that point.
  • Calamari pizza. Don't knock it 'til you try it.
  • Sauerbraten, AKA the "best thing on the menu" over at Cafe Steinhof in Crooklyn, NY. Nothing but steins, schnitzels, and spaetzle over there.

In a New York State of Mind

About to brave this blizzard in Dunndee's dirty Jerz sled to kick it in NYC tonight and the rest of the weekend.

Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Quality Kwanzaa, Enjoyable Secular Time Off, etc.

My very best wishes to you and yours on this Xmas Eve. Everything isn't all peaches and cream right now, but I will leave you with the wise words of today's fortune from Billy Tse's lunch, which is oddly fitting for our current situation:

Be willing to believe in anything that is good.
Be it our POTUS-elect, American business, catfish tacos, off-key John Denver songs or the Broseph's spinach & artichoke dip, I'll buy that (and I did, for $10.19).

Whiteout Conditions

The best wintertime New England Sundays involve glazed bacon (apple cider & brown sugar), a leisurely breakfast over the Globe, and a snow game drubbing of the week's opponent at Gillette. Nothing like a good snow game. Today's was ridiculous.

Looks like we'll have a white Christmas this year, although it'll probably be nasty gray slush by Thursday. Either way, this weekend's blizzard was quite enjoyable if you enjoy being a shut-in. If I have to tolerate winter, then pour the snow on.

Mulled cider on the stove (rum-less, alas), Paul Simon on the hi-fi, and cellentani with meat sauce on the menu for tonight.

The rest of '08 should be easy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoy the food, fam, and football today. May all your postprandial gobblers be appropriately gluttonous.

"Let's get the [expletive deleted] out of here."

So said my boss right before I heeded his advice a little while ago. Time to start a weekend, folks.

Enjoy it!

Happy Patriots' Day!

Big weekend for Red Sox baseball. Saturday I attended the Sox' 5-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. Manny jacked #496. You can see the Park below:

Awesome come-from-behind win yesterday as the Sox put up 4 in the bottom of the 8th despite having lost Manny early in the game. He got booted after arguing a very close third strike. Just stupid. But he's locked in and fired up these days.

And today is Patriots' Day, aka Marathon Monday. Most of the Commonwealth is off today, and the Sox are playing at 11:05. Nothing like some morning baseball! The Sox have the opportunity to sweep this four-game series against the Rangers. Buchholz vs. ex-Sox Gabbard.

Go Sox!

Happy New Year!

Ah, 2007. We hardly knew ye.

Happy 2008 everybody! First order of business is my joining the Blog365 social network on Ning. The idea? Simple - blog at least once a day in 2008. This should be interesting.

The thing is, I had 359 entries in 2007, so volume-wise I'm right on target. Just need to enforce the daily frequency. So we should have a good number and frequency of posts here at Chez MRhé in 2008! (Quality remains to be seen.)

Xmas Decadence

My Mom made a tiramisu torte for dessert last night for Christmas Day at my uncle's house. It was probably the best dessert I've ever had. It consisted of espresso ice cream, a layer of chocolate sauce, and mascarpone ice cream bordered by ladyfingers, topped with cocoa powder, and liberally drizzled with hot chocolate sauce upon serving. She made the ice cream herself. Rich, creamy, and extraordinarily delicious. I had a second piece. I never have a second piece. And this sweetness-gushing comes from one who does not usually take dessert with any degree of frequency or excess. But I could not resist. It was heavenly, ethereal, otherwordly - a frozen confectionary concoction without peer in this life.

Brava, Mama.

Merry Christmas!

I hope Santa was good to you.

I love Edmund Fitzgerald's voice.

I'm looking forward to some quality time off over the holidays, starting right now. This will give me the opportunity to finish my book, Astonishing Tales of the Sea.

A belated Happy Festivus to you all!

A Day Late (Apologies to the Veterans)

Hanson says it better than I can, but:

Thank you, Chris, Bryan, Teresa, Nichole; other friends and family; and countless veterans, past, present, and future; who suffer hardship, pain, and death - without control over the policies which demand it of them - so that the rest of us can live relatively unaffected by so much of the evil in this world.

Happy Veterans Day.

Fourth of July

'Tabblo:

Every Fourth of July (and several other times annually), the USS Constitution takes her Turnaround Cruise from her berth in Charlestown across Boston Harbor to Castle Island, where she turns and fires a 21-gun salute to the gathered crowd of
spectators.... See my Tabblo>

Independence Day

A pretty awesome 4th of July, considering the rain that started falling in the evening. I woke up bright and early yesterday morning and went with my Mom over to Castle Island in South Boston. Every 4th (and a few other times during the year) the USS Constitution has her turnaround cruise from her berth in Charlestown out to Castle Island and back. I had never been, and it was a near-perfect morning for it. Truly an awesome event to see her "sail" out (pushed by tugs), turn to face Fort Independence bow-on, and fire a 21-gun salute in an alternating rolling broadside. A 200-plus year-old piece of national history right there in the harbor. Amazing. A Tabblo of the event is forthcoming. (Here it is.)

Early that evening I met up with Scotticus, Lydia, Laura and various MIT alumni for Scottoway's birthday dinner at the inestimable Border Cafe in Harvard Square.

I had the catfish tacos. They were tremendous.

Due to the inclement weather, I didn't attend the scene down on the Esplanade, but we had a few people over to Club 259 for drinks. Our living room actually afforded us a pretty decent spot to watch the fireworks. Not too fantastic, but a fun time.

I spent rather a long time on the phone late last night with people in Harker Heights, TX, including a *certain* Dunndee, a *certain* Mean Rachel, and a certain Emily, whose hair is either strawberry blonde, dirty blonde, dirty brown(?), or red. Topics included: the quality of Dunndee's BBQ (word on the street was: good, which I found surprising), Cosper's rub, small-handed backup drummers, Scotticus, rain, the quality of Dunndee's Beirut game (word on the street was: poor, which I found unsurprising), and of course JTD (peep Joe's MySpace page - bunch of babes in his top friends!)

I somehow got roped into counting down shots of Hennessy for everyone (who shoots Hennessy?) until they killed a bottle that had been lying around since 2006. I found that even a small amount of Hennessy takes a long time for three people to drink, and that it tends to result in slurred speech on the cellophone.

Good times were had by all.
