It's not a hill, it's a mountain.

I downloaded U2's new album, No Line On the Horizon, a few days ago. It's one of those albums that takes a few listens to really get you roped in. I was disappointed at first - I wasn't blown away, as I quite often am by U2. At first it seemed like a big block of similar-sounding tunes without any standouts, but there are several great tracks on there. It took me several tries before a few songs started to click with me, but now I'm liking it more and more. It's been getting steady replay over the last few days.

Only love
Only love can leave such a mark

But only love
Only love can heal such a scar

It would be a shame if "Magnificent" were not. A minute-long intro of steady, thumping drums bursts into exultant, driving music. It's the kind of elevated, high-energy tune that's perfect for cruising down an open highway. (Or the information superhighway!) Probably my favorite track.

I did not notice the passersby
And they did not notice me

Bono gets slow and yearning in "Moment of Surrender." Kind of moody.

Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot

"I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" is quintessential modern U2. Hard to explain but you'll know what I mean when you hear it. Great chorus and lyrics - triumphant pop!

Once I knew there was a love divine
Then came a time I thought it knew me not

"White As Snow" is rather sad, atmospheric, almost unsettling in its wistfulness. Beautiful tune.

There's nothing you have that I need
I can breathe
Breathe now

"Breathe" is a burst of energy and The Edge's guitar. To be played at high volume only.

Stop helping God across the road like a little old lady

"Stand Up Comedy" is another great, upbeat, high-energy tune with possibly the best line on the album.

The title track makes an appearance in two versions, No Line On the Horizon and No Line On the Horizon (2). It's a pretty good tune; I think I prefer the second take.

No Line On the Horizon is a solid addition to the extensive discography of one of the greatest bands ever - what's not to like?
