Puff, Puff, Pass: The Commonwealth Goes Green

Mind if I spark a J?

I'm surprised, but glad, that #1 was handily defeated. I thought the vote would be much closer, especially given the current status of the economy. I guess the Commonwealth really is incredibly liberal.

As for the doggies - I voted no because I don't have much of an opinion on the matter. Dog racing has been dying a slow death in recent years, but to up and ban it? That's quite a leap.

Yeah, I was pretty worried about question 1 -- everything I had read about it seemed to indicate it was in danger of passing. Dodged a bullet there. Phew. That could have been a Bay State trainwreck.

In terms of other ballot questions, I think this year is a mixed bag. Those two abortion-related questions were defeated, which is a relief, but I am very saddened by what is looking to be a gay marriage ban in... California. That is just so crazy to me. But the anti-CAFO question that was passed is a very important one for promoting changes in agriculture, food, and public health in this country.

Though together it seems a rather bitter triumph. I'd like to think we can start dismantling some of the extreme confinement we in this country put our gay and lesbian neighbors -- not just our chickens -- in.

The bans are a minor setback. They will be lifted over time, I believe. Progress in America is rarely linear, or quick, or easy.

But I'm brimming with hope!
