Kind of Blue

Kind of Blue is perhaps the perfect chill album. When I got into work this morning I cued it up, and I've been listening to it on repeat since. So mellow, so easy to keep one's chi in balance as one deals with the vicissitudes of TCB. If you haven't experienced this gem from Mr. Miles Davis, then do yourself a favor and take a listen.

If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

While nothing compares to 'Kind of Blue,' if possible you should grab 'In a Silent Way' - it's a different sort of music, equally atmospheric and chill but funkier and in an electric vein. No Trane or Cannon, just sneaky soprano saxophone, spare guitar from McLaughlin, a quietly insistent rhythm section, and Miles near the height of his powers on trumpet. It's from another world, and can serve a similar purpose to 'Kind of Blue' depending on yer mood.

Miles's other electric albums aren't as consistently trance-inducing, though of course they have their own appeal. There's a live album featuring the 'Kind of Blue' ensemble as well - I think you can just track down the Miles & Trane @ Columbia box set for the whole story. But yeah, 'Kind of Blue' is perfect of its kind.

@Wally: Cool, thanks for the rec. Kind of Blue is about the extent of my jazz collection, but it's so damn good. I'd like to explore some more stuff.

My first "serious" jazz purchase was Ella Fitzgerald in Budapest. I bought it primarily for her take on "Mack The Knife" featuring various shout outs to her contemporaries; most notably to Louis Armstrong as Ella's impression is both hilarious and eerily accurate.

I've sampled some tracks from Kind Of Blue and it certainly is chill. Which I love.

But if you're ever interested in a collection more varied in tempo, definitely check out Ella. Specifically, "As Time Goes By."
