Why I Hang My Hat in Tennessee

For a long time I didn't like country music at all. I appreciated the sort of folk/country classics of Cash, Denver, Nelson, etc., but the popular, twangy stuff never really appealed to me (Shania and Faith excepted, for obvious reasons).

Down in Tejas, however, I heard a fair amount of country via Dunndee's Sirius satellite radio, and I must say some of those line dancin' tunes got into my blood. Also, one of my coworkers has made my listening to Rascal Flatts on a daily basis a fait accompli.

If you actually listen to a lot of country lyrics (I used to block it all out and try to find some Dre), they are generally pretty amusing, and once you get into the spirit of the whole thing there are some great tunes out there. Recently I've been listening to Kickin' Country on iTunes Radio, and it's pretty fantastic.

Be sure to check out Jason Aldean's "Amarillo Sky." That's some good stuff right there.

Anyway the actual reason for this post was because I wanted to try out this Radio.Blog.Club rig that I found courtesy of MeanRachel. Here's a gem; enjoy:

NOt EXACTLY on pooooooiiiinnnT (as if I could stay on point for more than two secs!), but you might wish to check out Cheryl Wheeler as a balladeer and sometime county-ISH singer: she would certainly suit your (apparently) usual ... "mood"....iff-ish that is what it might be fcalled without offense to you.

finally! i've been trying to get your durn comments to work all day.

i love country music--it always makes me cry. especially that sara evans song that's out right now? when she says "dad" i always mist up for no good reason!

i mention this book too much on the internet and in regular conversation (and i haven't even finished reading it), but chuck klosterman wrote a chapter on country music in his "sex, drugs and cocoa puffs," entitled 'toby over moby.' he basically says (in the course of proving that the dixie chicks are today's van halen) that anyone who sweepingly claims they hate country is saying so because they don't understand it's simplicity... which is, tangentially, the same reason eminem has inspired so much controversy. ha. it's a funny book, read it.

rooroo - An interesting point about country music. I think there might be a lot of truth to it, at least in my experience.

Is it good? I've heard good things about it.

I'm glad the "taste of Tejas" has worn off on you a bit.
Having listened to a little bit of everything all my life, and mostly country when I was a kid, I think it's interesting that you're just now turning to country. Lately I have turned away from country, and I think anyone who listens to country regularly will tell you that the genre is in a slump right now.
