Capital Tunes

Radio Free DC is the October '08 release from Fort Knox Five, a group based in the District. I came across this group in a serendipitous manner (some quick internet research on a tune played in last week's Fringe ep led me to "Insight" off RFDC). With plenty of iTunes gift ammo I decided to take a chance on the entire album.

Verdict? Funk-ay.

Fort Knox Five has a great sound that's a mix of seemingly everything: hip-hop, funk, latin, dancehall, reggae, electronica. A couple mostly instrumental tracks that sound like they were sampled from theme songs to '70's cop shows ("The Spirit of '75" and "Papa Was Stoned"). Simple, straight-up message in "Funk 4 Peace." "Not Gonna Take It" is a fantastic deep, smooth reggae jam. Some crisp, intelligent rhymes over high-energy beats, especially on the album's best track, the aforementioned "Insight":

This is music with a meanin'
Party with a purpose
Bein' smart with the art
Makes the average folks nervous

"Party with a purpose" indeed. Triumphant, funky, funky horns throughout.

It's a great, upbeat album. At least do yourself a favor and download "Insight" - it's hot. Has an anthemic, Jurassic Five feel to it. Would be great to crank on a hot summer's day (whatever that's like).

Spin this on the hi-fi at your next fondue party and the proverbial roof will be raised. Oh yes, 'twill be raised.
