Horrific: Haiti earthquake photos (Boston.com)

Boston.com has an incredible gallery up of photos of the destruction of the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti including several of the international rescue teams responding to the crisis.

Playa del Carmen Photos

Here are some photos I took during my week-long trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico in October 2009. I traveled down there for a friend's wedding. These photos are from a day trip to the Mayan ruins of Tulum, which are situated atop a cliff right along the coastline. We had lunch and lounged at a nearby beach and then went swimming in a cenote. Playa del Carmen is in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan peninsula, about 45 minutes away from Cancun. It is paradise.

Russia's Victory Day Photos

An excellent gallery of photos up at Boston.com of Russia's recent Victory Day parade - ostensibly to celebrate their victory in World War II, but increasingly a huge nationalist/militarist propaganda display.

Very cool photos, but ICBMs rolling past the Kremlin give me the willies.

My Mom recently sent me this photo she took of me last summer with a tour group at Charles Fort, located outside of Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland. See if you can tell where I might be in this shot...



Fun Fact: I spent several hours meandering around the fort by myself, snapping tons of photos. They closed and locked the gate on me (actually not that uncommon - there were a couple other sheepish tourists let out by the jovial tour guide). Suffice it to say that Mom was not happy, having been waiting outside the gate for some time.

I attended the God Bless America party at Cruftlabs this past Saturday to celebrate Lydia's Election Day birthday and our new President-elect. Scottotools Buildsalot constructed a "voting booth," complete with a lever that, when pulled, takes a digital photograph and automatically uploads it. You can see the booth and read about the intricate technical details here and check out the entire gallery of pics here. Great stuff - as always - from the Scotticus-elect (four more years!) The party was a blast, and I was happy to have had the chance to meet Governor Palin in person. She's quite charming without the filter of the liberal gotcha media!

"The place was like a morgue. I think everybody was depressed. When the players play, they feed off the adrenaline of the stadium and there wasn't an ounce of adrenaline there. Me and my buddies were trying to get something going. We tried to start the Wave, tried to get them to exert some energy. A guy yelled, 'Take your shirt off.' So I did. We got them all fired up. Then security came up to me. They said we got a call from someone on the hotline complaining that I had my shirt off and to put it on. So I put it back on for a minute and then they started scoring the first couple of runs. So I took it off again. The security guy was laughing at me and said, 'Dude, it's working.' People came down, shaking hands, thanking me for bringing 'em back, saying, 'You did it, buddy.' Then the woman who complained came down after the game, she apologized and had her picture taken with me."

Europe Trip 2008: Ireland Tabblo

I spent a week in Ireland with family from June 6-13, 2008. We stayed in the small seaside town of Baltimore, located in County Cork on the southwestern peninsula of the Emerald Isle. Here is a collection of pics (mostly mine but some taken by my Mom) of my travels around Cork, including the Beara Peninsula, Sherkin Island, Kinsale, Bantry, Glengariff, Skibbereen, and other places.
